This is a much rarer scenario than you think. In the case of a life or death scenario, almost no humans would favor the dog. In less serious daily situations the person may indeed favor the dog. This doesn't really hold that much weight, as there are hidden considerations on a much larger scale than the situation at hand.

Multiple people have been gravely injured or even died after trying to rescue dogs from Yellowstone's hot springs. It's literally suicide but it's many people's first instincts. Humans and dogs have a symbiotic relationship. Both species are basically hard wired to work together.

dogs are dumb and clueless. i see a blank stare when they look at me. crows have more problem solving and innate intelligence than a dog. dogs have a bit of social intelligence and trainability but that's all they're entirely dependent on us after thousands of years living with us.

Pets are 100% reliable on you for their needs so they're a good way to teach a child responsibilities, empathy and something akin to parenting.
