Did a key dev leave? I need an actual explanation, not “they’re lazy”

they’re lazy

What went right:

Masuda left to oversee BDSP

they're lazy

they release every game unfinished to meet the deadlines of a multimedia franchise

2 years is a really short dev time for an open world style game
BotW was in development for over twice as long

Making 3d games is harder than making 2d games, but they didn't want to spend more money/time.

That is all there is to it. Any excuse Masuda ever gave was a lie because japanese people would never throw their bosses and partners under the bus, but at the end of the day it is the naked truth.

The franchise became a merchandise shitting machine. Everything is planned in advance leaving no room for major delays. Games have to come out in time for the premier of anime seasons, trading card sets, and merchandise releases.

Pair this with the fact that Gamefreak won't hire more staff, and don't have much experience making games outside of underpowered handhelds... and the fact that despite the faults of their games, the fans will support them lovingly anyway... it spells disaster that won't get better unless someone important at gamefreak suddenly gets some integrety.

Also Satoshi Tajiri pretty much fucked off.

accidentally became worldwide IP and franchise controlled by 3 entities put on a release schedule with a short development period to align with anime and toy releases to maximize profits of their best selling product (toys) not quality games.

But enough about Niantic. We are talking about Gamefreak

Other series with yearly releases either outsource some of them or have multiple full dev teams. GF dipped their toes in outsourcing with BDSP but generally doesn't do this.

Dev times have increased for all games due to increased graphics. To keep the tradition of having a new generation every 3 years they have had to keep cutting corners.

Okay?

You haven't asked an actual question so what makes you think you deserve an actual explanation?

How long did PLA take to make? What are they even doing with it? Calling it a spin-off to avoid bitching from people who want the same game again, and then making the formula a mainline pair of games if the response is good?

I can’t find any development stories anywhere

Profit is more important than revenue

you say that as if the games were good before

The games don't matter at all anymore. Pokemon as a brand is about the toys and merch now. They pump out a game a year so that they can make new merch based on the new characters and pokes in them. There probably will come a time in the future where we get pokes introduced in merch and toys first before they're seen in any game/manga/anime.

The jump to 3D. Pixel art is their forte and they've proven time and time again that they can't do a polished a fully fledged game in 3D. It's only going to get worse as tech gets more powerful and expectations increase. You might love PLA now but after 2 or 3 games like it the mechanics alone wouldn't be enough to carry them anymore

Why do people pay $30 for a plushie?

What are you even trying to say??

I'd kill for a Pokemon game with really good pixel art like those Johto Redrawn ones that keep going around

It’s infuriating how they got to 3DS tech and were able to make a elder godlike sprite game, but instead made a 20 fps shitshow

Nothing?
PLA is the best game they've ever made

>pixel art is their forte
>don’t hand animate the pixel animations
if you’ve ever used a pixel art program and animated yourself you can easily tell when something is just pushed and pulled vs having frames hand drawn
Not that I blame them hand animating that many pixel pokemon is a lot of labor when you’re low on talent/skill
But pixel art is a dying art unfortunately so it’s much easier to reap fresh game design graduates (which they now do yearly) with 3D experience

>game freak would magically become good at spritework after being shit at spritework for 16 years bros I swear

>Pixel art is their forte
Did we play different games or something?

they refuse to let the right people direct multiple games.
