Wood isn't conductive so makes a fine outer casing for an electrical device. In fact the majority of household electronics were wooden before injection molded plastic was commonplace. You can just screw components right into it and be less concerned about shorting out. Metal is a challenge. You've got to insulate the shell from the current. I once had an old metal appliance that shorted out just from being turned upside down.
