There are different writers who have different visions for what Pokemon are. The early writers saw them as very intelligent and complex creatures with agency who partner with humans and get caught of their own accord. This was written into the lore through things like the Sinnoh myths and Dr. Footstep’s dialogue.
Modern writers see them as simple beasts, and the player as a beast tamer. That’s why they’ve shat all over the previous lore about human-Pokemon relations.

If anything the LA protagonist is unrealistic because they aren't asking everyone for the WiFi password or complaining about not being able to get on TikTok.
