I was a public defender for three years. My experience:

> half of my clients didn't think I was a "real" lawyer
>office was all young lawyers or people who had been there since the 90s
>people there longer than 10 years were always "brushing up" their resumes but never actually did anything to move on
>rule was "gone in 5 years or there forever"
>everyone bitched they weren't paid enough, yet few showed up to work before 9:30 and almost all left by 3:30 PM
>drinking, drinking, more drinking
>most of the office was overweight or fat
>basically 75% of the work was done by 3 or 4 lawyers out of an office of 20

>go to court
>file a motion
>ready to argue it
>judge stops me from talking and immediately denies it

>go to court
>unruly defendant
>judge directs me to talk to them
>they yell at me and spit in my face
>almost assault me
>try to get out of it
>judge appoints me to the case

>guilty plea
>guilty plea
>guilty plea

>do a trial
>jury deliberating for about 10 minutes
>guilty all counts

>private counsel paid $5k for the same case
>I was paid approximately $50-100
>judge laughs at the private lawyer jokes
>judge doesn't laugh at my jokes
>no one laughs
>im a public defender

Probably the greatest job I will ever have, thankfully I got out of it though I was turning extremely lazy

civil lawyer, I make twice as much but I had some fun as a public defender. I miss it sometimes, but I am glad I moved on when I did. I could have worked there for 20 years.

So much for "equal before the law".
As ever, cash pays freedom.

I know the feel, famalam. I thought about shifting to something civil, but I'd also like to not commit suicide. I'm guessing insurance defense?

Houstonian here. Hell no it isn't safe. The pay is more than you can imagine but the industry is more than happy to fire you to maintain profits. Worse still, it happens industry-wide at around the same time.
