when I was in college I volunteered in rural Africa multiple times and made some friends there
long story short there's one guy who I thought was a really amazing person but was born into incredibly shitty circumstances so I decided to start financially supporting him
By now I've been financially supporting for the last eight years and in that time he has acquired a wife and two kids who go to private school and a house and a plot of farmland. I paid for all of it -- probably $30,000 in total.
As a sign of gratitude, he named his firstborn after me. We send messages back and forth several times a week. He sends me pictures of his kids from time to time.

if I have cash, yes, I feel obligated to stop and give at least something to anyone who asks for help, because Jesus said that if someone asks you for help and you say no then it's the same as if Jesus asked you for help and you said no
however when you're in a market in Africa surrounded by people you need to be smart about it; you can't just hand a bill to every outstretched hand because more will keep coming. A good idea is to prioritize people who visibly need the help -- amputees, blind people, crazy people, etc. The people who are fit to work will see that you're only giving money to people who are unfit to work and they'll back off.
I actually went to go visit him earlier this year; I had to fight back tears when I met his wife and kids for the first time -- here's something good in the world that I had a hand in. His mom still lives in pretty deplorable conditions; I waffle on whether or not I should send him another $7.5K so he can build a small house for his mom.

based. You gotta make it first, then give back to your community. I.E Dolly Parton made the buddy program that promises middle school kids $500 dollars when they graduate so long as their chosen "buddy" graduates with them as well. Her Imagination Library has given 148 million free books to children across the us as of November 2020. Kendrick Lamar has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to schools in Compton and is a familiar face in town. It really is the best way to go at it, even if we can't donate as much as the people mentioned
