Will the metaverse ever have anything that’s even remotely useful or is it doomed to just be a gimmick with no real practical value whatsoever?

The "metaverse" will only arrive once a platform/product is good enough to have a marketplace in/around it.
building the marketplace before the product is hopeless.
The metaverse its just a fancy word to refer to an advanced internet. More precisely a stage in which it could be (if wanted) indistinguishable from reality.
Saying that the metaverse it's just a gimmick its like saying the internet it's just a place to exchange porn and hang around (which it is)

It's a gimmick. Metaverses aren't even a new concept. Before Meta, VRChat and Roblox, we had Second Life, which has been around for 20 years. Second Life itself was based on games like Worlds Chat.
While all of those games have thriving internal economies, they have neither replaced ordinary life nor make enough money to justify the enormity of money being splashed onto this theoretical gold mine.
