Currently have $630 / week and no debt. Life is pretty comfy now, I don't spend a lot and work from home for a charity 3 days a week and study a masters.

It won't go like that though. People who are to blame:

1) The kid's parents for letting him be so fat, because if he wasn't morbidly obese he would have been able to fit in the fucking seat

2) The attendant who's supposed to check if everyone is secure before anything happens, this has been standard procedure for years, most places now have a seat from the ride at the start of the line so people can check if they fit in it properly before lining up for hours.

I assume this was some hood tier cut price amusement park / travelling carnival thing which explains why the checks weren't done properly?

seatbelt wouldnt guarantee safety imo

the fault is solely on the engineer who let it "lock" at that angle. it should only start locking at 100% safe positions. if you cant fit in those locks, sorry you cant ride.

I wonder if the carnival has some sort of notice up about restrictions due to weight or size, if they do it might be a lot harder to win a case depending on what state they're in and which judge they pull. I assume they have a terms and conditions notice of some sort which you agree to by entering the premises, but if they didn't have a size / weight warning notice / disclaimer up specifically on the ride then they're fucked regardless of what caused it.

I would probably want no less than 2X my total expenses. The more the better though, due to inflation, unpredictable future performance, etc. The last thing you want to do is return to the wage cage one day because you were too eager with too little income.
