It is a link to the image, the image is stored on IPFS and backed up to Filecoin. But your statement is basically right.

but it's not only about the image, it's the metadata and what you can do with it. (for example enter a protected website, ticket system, Patent and Trademark registration, housing ownership... etc)

I've also worked with Godot and Unity game Engine a while ago and they both have ENJ integration so you can basically create in-game NFT assets that are freely tradable by the user. (not worth million of dollar, but usecase)

There is a real usecase for ntf's, theoretically.
