I might be a bizlet but, in the case of the current market, isn't inflation a side-effect of printing money to increase liquidity? If there's more money in the system, won't that encourage the public to spend and reduce the risk of the economy grinding to a halt?

Well, if it's a fiat currency then it's not backed up by anything like the gold standard, right? The price is determined by demand (i.e. how much it's being used) vs. supply (i.e. how much is in circulation). If they put more out into circulation, then the value of every unit goes down but more economic transactions can take place (b/c more money available) so your economy doesn't grind to a halt.
