One of the main things that didn't exist in the former soviet union was western businesses. They either leave now in an attempt to save that market space or they leave the new soviet union when putin decides they can make their own brand everything and give the people of Russia no choice. The essence is that behind every company are people. It's not an abstract entity that is 100% rational and profit-oriented. Companies are vehicles/tools for people to conduct business. That means companies are subject to regulatory pressure. No CEO wants to go to jail. And it's not outlandish to find the current sanctions regime to be fairly nebulous and ever-changing still. It might be safer and even more profitable to just cut ties for a while than to employ an army of lawyers to ensure complicance to every sanction that might apply to the main company, all its international daughters, all the upstream suppliers and downstream clients, all the service providers. Also, every major company got through COVID lockdowns on state subsidies, might not be the best time to get on the wrong side of nation states. Part of it is also that war is bad for business. The majority of car manufacturing in Germany and Austria is about to shut down because VW imported their wiring harnesses from Ukraine and did it just-in-time style, meaning they ran out 2 days into the war. Companies love open borders and stability. Uncertainty and closed borders is bad for business and so they punish warmongers. Seems fairly rational to me. Perhaps doesn't optimize current profits, but might be advantageous in the long run.
