The primary purpose of Terra is pure algorithmic decentralized stablecoins, UST being the largest. And I mean truly decentralized, unlike USDC USDT PAX DAI etc. It's fulfilling the original vision of bitcoin as fast, cheap peer to peer electronic cash. Already lots of useful financial instruments built on top of it with a ton more coming.
Anyways, LUNA is the native Terra token that maintains the stablecoins peg through arbitrage mechanisms. So more demand for any Terra stablecoins puts deflationary pressure on LUNA and drives the price higher.
