If you use the contract correctly, it would swap weth for your eth and the reverse is possible too. This guy just used the transfer function and sent the eth to the contract.

Ether is the currency of Ethereum, but it is not an ERC-20 coin, that means Ether doesn't have capabilities such as approve spender, transferFrom, etc.
So Wrapped Ether was created, it's Ether but in ERC-20 form.

You deposit your Ether to this contract and it automatically triggers the deposit() function, which gives you WETH.

He wanted to swap back from WETH to ETH, and thought he just needed to send WETH.
But there's nothing in the contract which receives WETH and sends back ETH. You have to call the withdraw() function, which he didn't do.

There's a lot of money trapped inside the contract, more than a million dollars worth of mistakes, pic related.

That's not how the EVM work, the contract don't know that you're sending a token to it.
