In a piece she wrote for Weekly Pro Wrestling (via Fightful), Hikaru Shida spoke about the difficulty for Joshi wrestlers to get ahead in AEW as the roster continues to change and evolve. She also claimed that AEW did not help its Japanese stars find housing in the United States, which is another challenge for anyone looking to come over.
She wrote: “AEW is an organization that is constantly changing, and the wrestlers come and go very rapidly. TV and YouTube. If you’ve been following AEW on FITE TV or YouTube, you’ll know that the women’s division in particular has seen an increase in the number of young and dynamic wrestlers over the past year.
At the time of the launch, the women’s division of AEW relied heavily on Japanese female pro wrestlers, and that was one of the selling points of the division. But that was only for a while after the launch. Nowadays, being a Japanese female pro wrestler is not as much of an advantage as it used to be.
On the contrary, it has become more of a handicap in terms of language barrier, obtaining a work visa, and the Corona disaster. I myself am no exception to this, and even as a member of the AEW since its inception and a former Women’s Champion, I am struggling to survive in the current AEW.

Shida's the only one who made it because she actually looks like a full grown woman and wrestles competently in a style that isn't too far from western wrestling, and also because she's probably fucking Kenny. Riho, Yuka and Shoko look like they're 12 years old running and flipping around the ring squealing and beating women, and in one case, men, who are twice or three times their size. Even Itoh, who knows enough meme English to get herself over, came across as more of the same pedobait idol magic girl bullshit that western fans just don't give a fuck about. It may be great in Japan but it's mega fucking cringe here and only joshipedos will defend it. Emi is just an old dimeless self mark.
