The problem is seeing any suffering as 'punishment'. It says "endure your trials as discipline", but this can only be done by God's Grace. One who endures suffering this way is participating in the Cross of Christ and by example this becomes redemptive.
If you view things as punishment, then you're blaming God.. then one tends to assign blame to others and this leads to abdication of personal responsibility....

No one is innocent because of sin. But in many cases, punishment is an indicator that you are God's child. He wants you to be the best you, and there is something that you do that harms you and needs to change for you to grow.
When you see evil people prosper, they are not God's children. They are allowed to do as they please because the temporary god of this world, Satan, is their father. This world is designed to break you down, and it will! The question is: will you let God put you back together better than you were before? He can, you know.
