Russia is a major provider of energy and fertilizer to Europe and America respectively. Pushing a new cold war by supplying Ukraine like we did, Russia isn't going to just turn the gas back on. They have a vested interest in letting Europe freeze and America starve, so the economies crash.
NATO is now desperate to help Ukraine retake everything, including Crimea, because that will put all those petroleum reserves back under the control of Ukraine. The Kharkov region has huge shale deposits and the part of the Black Sea in Crimea's waters are rich with undersea oil deposits.
If they succeed in kicking Russia out and settling a peace treaty, then the West is free to dump as much money and technology as they can into developing Ukraine into a new gas and fertilizer giant that's obedient to NATO in an effort to mitigate the pain we're going to face if things continue.
