Ukraine is a proxy war, the aim is not to conquer territory but to hurt NATO. The longer Ukraine is acting as a bottomless pit for money and weapons the bigger a hit NATO takes. If I was Russia, I would be planning to keep the war rumbling along for at least another year or two without collapsing the Ukrainian government, ensuring that NATO has to keep propping it up or lose face. We all know that if Russia had wanted to, they could have turned Kiev into a smoking crater within hours if that had been the objective.

Russian soldiers directly inside a country and dying means it's not a proxy. It's NATO that is doing a proxy by having Ukraine army die while they give them weapons.

I don’t see any reason for why Russia would want to take over the whole of Ukraine, that would be a huge unnecessary cost.
