Basically every city in Europe has some form of tunnel system beneath it. Ranging from medival tunnels (e.g.: most castles in Germany are connected to another, especially in Hesse and Bavaria), catacombs (e.g.: Paris, London, Berlin, Crete and Rome have extensive undergrounds), ice cellars (e.g.: the systems beneath vineyards), bunkers (from countless wars, not only WWI/II and mining operations (ranging back to the Romans).
If you ever stroll through an old european city and wonder why there is post modern architecture and key points in middle of Fachwerk and the like, in spite of the city not sustaining any meaningful damage from bombing: it's to cover the entrances. Buildings with entrances they cannot demolish are all without exception owned by either the governmend (diretcly or in a roundabout way through 'non-profits' and the like), the church or individual with very close ties to either.
Mind you a number of 'nature parks' and areas designated for protection are rather dubious too, to say the least - though in these cases I don't mind it, I am glad wildlife has atleast some sanctuaries left.

For those interested, you should definitely look into "Eisställe" or the undergounds mentioned above. Rome is particularly intriguing. There are cathedrales in which you could descend a couple hundreds meters beneath the earth, walking through old buildings with still functional water supplication systems. I dunno whether these sites are still open to tourists, they were until 2015/16 atleast. Needless to say it was quite shocking to see that Rome basically had several centuries worth of functional infrastructure beneath it - they have essentially build each iteration of Rome on the last, you are walking ontop of the equivalent of skyscrapers so to speak. It's really weird and difficault to convey, you must have seen it to understand the scale, spatial and temporal.
