Repoosting my opinion. Kharkov was literally a feint to get russia to move it's airpower out of the south. I don't think the Ukrainians actually expected the front to collapse, they just wanted airpower gone so the russians had to pull back into artillery cover from the right bank, so they could trap them via control by fire on the river. Blowing the russians the fuck out in the north was just a bonus. 10k casualties (which is a super high estimate) for 25k POWs with equipment is a worthwhile loss.
