How does Hiroshima and Nagasaki still exist?

I thought nuclear radiation stuck around for generations, so how are Hiroshima and Nagasaki both thriving cities?
Why doesn't Japan hate America for dropping nuclear bombs, the most evil thing a nation can do in our modern world? Makes no sense to me

I think nations that have had a lot of wars and conflicts in their history develop a sense of perspective so the culture accepts wars happen, people die, and in time it will be probably forgotten. It wasn't some one-sided genocidal massacre, it was war. In the UK we might banter with the French or Germans, but I'd think anyone who genuinely hated Germans for WW2 is weird.

As previously mentioned, nukes dropped on Japan was relatively low yield devices. Also, most devastating radiation is shortly after nuking. Shortly living isotopes are most dangerous ones. So a lot of got radiation burns, some later died from cancer. Now DECADES later, most of those short-living isotopes are already decayed, and "damaged people" have already died.

Only "dirty" radiation does (incomplete decay like Chernobyl and Fukushima). A nuclear bomb makes a clean blast through its radioactive material.

The US went on to create more fallout in western states doing nuclear testing. Utah got cooked by fallout. This is another reason boomers are crazy, they were kids while nuclear fallout was raining down across the country. Back across the ocean, Japan got really lucky with fukushima all things considered. Had the fuel assembly that blew up and landed in the ocean gone inland there would be a no go zone across the whole island. Look up the red trace in Russia to see what a really bad fallout accident looks like.

Sometimes I wonder if WW2 could have been prevented by not bankrupting Germany post WW1.

There was a man, I think he died in 2010, who lived in Hiroshima and survived the first bomb. He then traveled for work to... Nagasaki. He was the only officially recognized survivor of both nuke bombings and he still lived to an old age

Nuclear weapons and radiation are not as a damaging as people think. They're obviously bad, but decades of propaganda has led people to think nuke = planet of the apes.

In things where are involved DNA damaging factors, it is kinda a gamble. Inside a cell, there are DNA repairing mechanism. If DNA are split in one place, then it is easier to fix. If say, in 4 places, then when attempting to "reconnect the ends", DNA can be re-connected in wrong order. DNA got damaged. Was that damage in area where it is influental? Who knows. Say, if there is damage in proteins which regulates person sex drive, but that damage is in a kidney cell. So basically, at that moment, "error in code" is in inactive area. Also, human DNA have like 8% relic DNA which we have inhereted from random viruses.

But if damage was very, very intense (chemical canceriogenes or radiation) then it can be devastating (like, for those who handled radioactive waste in Chernobyl disaster).

It looks that this particular guy was quite lucky, that he got most of that radioactive damage in areas which was not live critical.
