I had an interesting discussion with a friend about the whole energodar NPP story.
My friend made the interesting point that Russia pushes the attacks on the NPP so much because they plan to declare Ukraine a terrorist state under international law. Why does it matter? Then you can legally target EVERY CIVIL SERVANT of the country. This is why Biden avoids even slightly acknowledging any plans to designate Russia as a terrorist state, since it implies everyone could legally and without warning kill every russian civil servant. Might be a reach, but so far Monke has been trying to at least somewhat use the international law as cover. If he would calibrate Ze in the first days it would be impossible to justify and Russia would set the precedent that it would just kill politicians it doesnt like.

The non-sperg answer to this question is simply that Russia intended to neutralize the U.S/EU/NATO threat in Ukraine, and assimilate parts of Ukraine while doing so. But this could only work if NATO weren't ready to gamble everything on Ukraine, which as it turns out they indeed were ready to do.
So instead of this being an easy job of Russia just rolling over Ukraine, it literally turned into an all-out war between NATO and Russia. Yes, it's Ukrainians dying, but literally everything else is NATO: The hardware, software, weapons, vehicles, equipment of all manners, intelligence, training, instructors, generals, tactics, strategies, etc. . Not to mention, it was obviously NATO (aka America) that was the driving force behind this whole conflict to begin with.
So Russia simply had to escalate.
