They would be called mean by western media 24/7 (like they aren't now) but they would be in a much better position by now, if they keep up with this limited operation they will probably take the north again, albeit with high losses, and hold the areas they still have, and have a fully equipped nation with full NATO support with immense hatred for them right at the border and possible internal strife, so their only option will be to bomb ukraine to rubble anyway.
