there is no benefit to using nukes. he either uses a big nuke and it's mutually assured destruction or he uses tactical nukes, and on what? attacking infantry? it does nothing outside hypersonics and tsunami submarines his nuclear bluster has been minimal i'd be really surprised if he uses any nukes

He sure could order it. But will those orders be fullfilled? All those nukes have to be launched manualy by humans. There is no automated system. Only the order distribution will be automated not the launch itself.
They didn't Nuke Afghanistan when that was clearly lost, I doubt they will here. That would basically be the death warrant of Putin personally, and potentially Russia itself (They've basically been told that a nuclear attack on Ukraine would be considered a nuclear attack on NATO)

Question is; when do the Ukranians stop? What can stop them? The Russians just keep retreating, they can't just set up a new line of defence whilly nilly. It appears the bulk of the Russian mobile reserve went to Kherson and became if not trapped then heavily engaged there.
Is Russian high command just hoping the Ukranians overextend? Gorge themselves on captured supplies? Laugh themselves to death with their success?
