See one thing people don't think about is Germany isn't making the shit quality chink steel that we all know about. They mainly export super high grade steel used for specific purposes. Nobody buys tool steel from the Chinese, for example. Special non-radioactive steels, which are usually taken from pre-nuclear age shipwrecks, are only processed in Germany as far as I know, for commercial use at least. We might make some but it's like for and by the government, even though there is industrial need for this steel. Plastics, too. The oldest gas works in the world is in Germany and it's shut down for the first time in over 150 years! Germany is the sole source of certain rare plastics. Etc.

Modern steel production is all tainted to a very small degree with radioactivity. To get steel that isn't, you need to find metal which was refined before the nuclear age and then pretty much cut it into shape in a special environment so you don't contaminate it. Sensors that scientists use are also likewise made from this steel.
One way they detect fake wines is to use these machines to detect faint traces of radioactive elements, if they're present, that means the wine itself was made after the bomb was first detonated. But this is just one use, you can read about examples of this in art collecting as well. Also if you want to detect small amounts of radiation in physics, you need to have an instrument which itself isn't radioactive to the threshold of detection. Etc.
