Britain had experienced a decade of stagflationary decline in the 70's much like the USA which led to huge amounts of strikes, unemployment and social unrest. Thatcher just pulled the plug on the whole system and blew up the unions, slashed and burned Britain's uncompetitive industries and public services, and let all the jobs go overseas. In turn lowering the quality of life for millions in Britain's but saving the economy from collapsing in the present. It provided a nice little sugar hit to get the economy working again but obviously long term the neo-lib supply side crap has just resulted in a hollowed out corpse of an economy that has no real industry other than finance and low-productivity services and a consumer base that is reliant on permanent tax cuts, worker real wage cuts and immigration to prop up the ponzi scheme based on taking on more debt to continue to pay for the further expanding property bubble created by the financisliation and economic liberalisation of every facet of life. She was also very socially conservative and promoted a culture of 'fuck you, got mine'. Basically any reason you can think why people in America hate Reagan It's the same for why people hate Thatcher.

Mostly it’s just poor northerners seething about not getting enough free gibs from her. First female prime minister but biggest balls since Churchill (unfortunately Churchill was evil, though). She was pro free markets to the point of shipping lots of manufacturing and mining jobs abroad. She was the last social conservative this country has had (despite being he first woman PM). She also BTFOed the Argies during the Falklands war. Pretty cool lady if you ask me.

Oh, and how could I forget... she strongly opposed the EEC, what became the European Union.

You have to remember it in the context of what came before. WWII and even WWI was still in living memory, then the empire falls apart but at least we still have lots of factories and jobs here, Boomers start reaching their 30s and suddenly some witch looking hag becomes Fuhrer, sells off everything to China and police beat the shit out of you and tell you to get another job that doesn't exist or join the military and get shot at by IRA snipers or Argentinians while she's talking about how everyone is lazy. Also all drugs, porn and cool movies are banned right after the fun 60s and can get you a long prison sentence. EU didn't really exist yet so you couldn't really emigrate. She also didn't like gays and wanted everyone to go to church. People were going mad which is what produced things like Rick Astley.

This is a lesson for the right. Yes that steel industry was a parasite producing steel at a loss that the tax payers had to pay. But we need to remember to find a way to fix problems that will not cause the working man to vote left for 100 years.
