CIA and their MK-Ultra campaign is a big part of it. LSD was introduced to large amounts of American youth by the CIA which made the young more susceptible to brainwashing and conditioning. This did not create the counter culture movement by itself. It only made its creation possible.
The KGB ideological subversion campaign helped create the ideological component of the counter culture movement. The Frankfurt school and their infiltration of American academia was the final nail in the coffin that made the counter culture movement so degenerate and subversive.
At some point, American glowniggers figured out that Soviets were up to something and that the KGB hijacked their mass brainwashing campaign. The CIA needed to put an end to the counter culture movement before they became a legitimate threat to the establishment. There were fears that a popular revolution might actually happen in the U.S. due to the massive amount of MK-Ultra’d Marxist acid-brained faggots in the American population.
The American establishment found their opportunity with Charles Manson. After all, Charles Manson was one of many who received LSD from the CIA and he looked similar to the hippy stereotype and also shared some beliefs of the movement. The media purposely popularized his crimes to the American masses to arouse fear about the counter culture movement, LSD and drug use in general. After this, there was now popular opposition to the movement and it gradually lost popularity over the years.
An equivalent of the counter culture movement does not exist today. Though, they did not fail entirely. In fact, many of their then-radical beliefs have been normalized today. Free sex, widespread drug use, hatred against the power elite, provocative music, disdain for traditionalist values and culture etc. The movement was successful in creating social change, although it was unable to overthrow the old establishment.

It didn't fail. Those people got old and now vote Democratic. Not all old people are Republicans. There's a significant portion of Boomers that are ultra liberal.
