Black culture has no heroes, no great epics, almost of of their culture is European. Every face they see of someone of did something great is white. It’s not that black people aren’t represented, it’s that historically they haven’t done anything to warrant representation. That is why they are so desperate not to create their own great new stories and heroes but rather to black faces in traditional places they never really existed. Nobody anywhere - not even black people themselves - think it makes any sense for there to be black elves, or black dwarves, or really any black people anywhere in Lord of the Rings, but that doesn’t matter. They don’t care about it making sense, they do r even really care about Lord of the Rings, they just need to see themselves in it. They need that justification in order to pretend that they belong, that they have been a part of the story all along. Even now nobody is arguing that what they’re doing somehow makes any sense within the context of Tolkien’s writings - they only attack you for being a racist if you don’t embrace it. Not just accept it, you HAVE to embrace it. Everyone knows tokenism even when they don’t want to see it, so it needs to be celebrated, lifted up beyond reproach so that they don’t have to face what it really is.
