Well, World War III will break out some time in the 2030s and last until the 2050s. That begins an era known as the Post-Atomic Horrors that lasts until the early 2100s. However during that time Zefram Cochrane will launch the Phoenix in Montana and make first contact with the Vulcans, who will aid willing nations in reconstruction until eventually United Earth is formed from the ashes of the old UN. United Earth will oversee the colonization of the Moon and Mars and several nearby solar systems, but notably NOT Alpha Centauri, as Proxima was already colonized by humans in the 1990s using lightspeed-hugging sleeper ships. Earth will recognize Alpha Centauri’s independence at least.

By turns humans will make contact with other alien races before eventually getting drawn into the Earth-Romulan War, which is won by Earth thanks to a coalition of allied worlds including Andor, Tellar, Vulcan, and Alpha Centauri. All five will then form the United Federation of Planets in 2161, which will then begin a period of reaching out and exploring the stars and getting more and more member worlds as time goes by until finally, by the 2370s, it has over a hundred and fifty member worlds and thousands of colonies spread out across 8,000 light years, in a region of space containing over two hundred million star systems total. It will be the second-largest nation in the Galaxy at that point, rivaled but not quite equalled by the Dominion and exceeded only by the Borg Collective.

So, that’s how long, more or less. We got WWIII and the Post-Atomic Horrors to get through first. World War III is going to be pretty bad - every major city on Earth will be destroyed, and 600 million people are gonna die. And I don’t even really wanna know how bad things have to be for an era of history to actually be called, in the history books, “The Post-Atomic Horrors”. But I guess we’ll see.

Oh yeah, worth noting that in Star Trek, Earth has had artificial gravity, effective cryogenic storage, and ships that can hug lightspeed since the 1980s. Also there was supposed to be the Eugenics Wars from 1992 to 1996 that went nuclear and killed 30 million people. We seem to have missed all that.

On the one hand, good, no Eugenics Wars…on the other hand, boo, no lightspeed hugging ships, artificial gravity, or cryogenic storage. I object to this reality and wish I could substitute another.

You're forgetting the part where in order to get the good scifi future, we had to endure world war three and the collapse of world governments. And even then, the Vulcans purposely slowed our warp engine progress by 100 years at the beginning.

He’s from San Francisco. He was meant to broadly represent “Asia” (he’s named after the Sulu Sea in the Philippines). He was also just supposed to represent future 23rd century folk in general.
