Do they not understand a thin penis projection like that into enemy positions puts them at risk of being cut off?
Or are the Vatniks that incompetent?

You have to do that to surround something. At the end of the day, it's either pushing the front line or risking like that.
Those risks can get countered hard if the gap closes though. tldr - whether it's smart or stupid depends on the execution.
the whole map is just vatnik projection
That's Vatnik map, has no bearing on reality
You don't know it is an armored assault until your scout makes contact and reports.
Front lines in the modern era of warfare aren't consistent lines of occupation. When you connect dots from one position to another it looks like a big pencil dick where Ukrainian forces are surrounded on all sides but the reality is that there are lots of gaps, many likely being thinly held. This is additionally true in the south of Ukraine where there's lots of flat open ground. Both sides are forced to occupy tree lines and villages which might have lots of space between them. This is also why both sides on all of the fronts are constantly fighting little battles of positioning. You want to capture the "hardpoints" that can allow you to control the largest amount of local territory with the fewest forces necessary. What we also know is that on many parts of the Kherson front line Russian forces are exceptionally thin. We were already getting reports of Russian units and equipment that always occupies the rear area being hit days ago which indicates that Ukrainians were breaking through a defensive line and causing havoc behind it.

pretty fuckin /k/ino. This was filmed in Kostromka. Looks like Ukraine's trying to widen its gains before penetrating even further south.
Ukrainians are more to tje south on their left flank around Dnieper.
Reminder that Russia has about 3 times the suicide rate of Nigeria
