If hundreds of militia groups decided to declare their bases and compounds where independent from the government, would the feds even try to fight them? They can certainly destroy 1 militia group but if they all coordinated then they could win. And with the internet the military can’t just massacre civilians. Why doesn’t this happen if Americans have lots of guns and believe their government is illegitimate?

Most people aren't willing to die fighting for anything, and those that are will only do so for a cause that is affirmed as just and righteous by a significant amount of the people around them.
What you need are people who are both brave enough to fight and principled enough to accept the infamy. They will be hated and slandered, even by their own families. By their own children. They need to be able to deal with this. Most people cannot.
There are probably only a few hundred sane people in this country that fit this description.
