Hijacked thermostats

I was reading the news this morning and I got to an article about people getting locked out of their thermostats in Colorado because of an "electrical grid emergency". They shut off the air remotely on a day that it was extremely hot. I'm looking at the picture in the article and I realize its the same fucking thermostat they installed in my apartment a month ago! I'm fucking furious! For anyone curious, it's called an Ecobee, and they told me they were "upgrading" my thermostat to a "smart" one.
I blocked it from the router but I don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to do now. Are they gonna turn of my heat when its below 0 outside? What the fuck!

Here's the article I forgot to put it in the post

anything "smart" which isn't 100% in your control is in someone else's control. look up the manual and see if you can get it offline.

i disconnected it and blocked all new connections from the router. if someone comes over ill have to add them manually. i think this should keep it offline unless it has some other way to call home.

wrap it in tinfoil and then piss on it
doesn't do anything to block the signal
just feels good

Buy a thermostat that doesn’t have “smart” functions and install it, you can get a new one from $15-$50 online and if you’ve ever used a screwdriver in your life you can install it yourself in 10 minutes.

Pretty sure you can just not connect it to wifi and use it like a normal thermostat. Also, the people in the article signed up for some service that allowed them to adjust their thermostat.

this seems dystopian but they always had the ability to cut power, water, gas or anything else from your house at any time.

>opting-in

There’s a whole range of legal issues with a utility stopping service, especially if the customer is current with their payments. But these micro blackouts to “take stress off the grid” don’t fall under that category. With all these smart devices collecting data they’ll be able to say you’ve used enough water or gas or electricity in a given day and cut you off for 24 hours.

All the idiots bitching that their thermostat got changed by their electric company are stupid goyim that bought the thermostat at a discount through their utility company. It's stated in the fine print that they might do this - this has been known for years. Why did these idiots think they were getting a discount Nest?

In California the “smart” meters they put outside the home also have a throttling ability. Try running too many window ac and they won’t blow cold. Happened 2 weeks ago when it hit 112. Had to move grandma and her o2 machine

that should cover it. my father has one of these, although I don't think he'd fancy disconnecting internet because hes addicted to the weather grid

Install a different thermostat

Bullshit. You can't brown-out a house - it would destroy most electrical appliances.

>Ecobee
do amerimutts really?
just get a replacement thermostat

any device that is networked is compromised. this is basic level understanding.

Lol, pay for smart product. Cry like a dumb consumer when it spies, and limits your lifestyle

All of this. Lots of stupid in OP

You know how Amazon's Ring has that meshnet feature that allows it to communicate with other Ring devices and upload data using their WiFi? Exactly the same principle is prevelent in all smart housetech. Short of sticking it in a Faraday cage/ripping it off the wall you're fucked.

That's literally all you have to do is make sure it doesn't have internet access.

death to america

This didn’t happen. If the ac is running, the only way it doesn’t blow cold, is if it’s. It working properly. You can’t do anything from the service into the house. T. Electrician

i was going to do this, but they come in every few months and spy on me under the guise of exterminating bugs. I guess I could swap it out every time

Ecobee and other smart thermostats do not do this. They need a specific SSID configuration.

>muh smart meter is controlling my appliances
amerimutt intelligence

theres even "great new deals" for the nascent homeowner from google. last time i saw, they did it practically for free, where they install all their surveillance crap inside and make it apart of the house. the selling point was (paraphrasing) "make your new home a smart one"

>I'm fucking furious!
Tape a small plastic tupperware box with a hand warmer inside it around the the thermostat on your wall, problem solved

>Because you enrolled in a dumb program

Not that I am for defending a big robbery utility or anything, but these retards technically did agree to this happening. It’s not like it’s some random unexpected egregious activity that happened, it’s literally in the contract to get these discounted or free thermostats and the idiots probably don’t even remember. Retards shouldn’t be allowed to have nice things.

i didnt buy or opt in to anything, my landlord just came in one day and installed it. can he opt in in my place? the electric is under my name
