The rules of your favorite edition are eternal, and they can't mandate that you use their danger hair races or wheelchair accessible dungeons. You should actually take advantage of these things existing in the hobby: it filters out players/DMs who want them, so now you know who not to include at your table.

AD&D 1e was good and has enough supplemental material to last a lifetime. You can use these books forever.
AD&D 2e was good. It gave us excellent campaign settings. It's compatible with AD&D 1e and there are more than enough books and supplements to last a lifetime.
D&D 3e/3.5e (See: D20) is when the game became commercialized and went from being a hobby to a commercial product. It's not terrible, but with the OGL, anyone and everyone could make materials so you have to sort through the good and the bad.
D&D 4e intentionally targeted those with low attention spans. No more 6+ hour marathons on a Saturday night. It's basically a video game played on paper.
D&D 5e went off the rails. Less books to purchase, which makes it more affordable for those who don't want to commit to the hobby. Constant scrutiny of anything considered "problematic" by vocal minority sections of society. IT'S FANTASY. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE UNREALISTIC.
Dungeons & Dragons was the #1 selling tabletop RPG for decades. When 5e came out and started down the woke path, Pathfinder overtook it.
