Whatever answer you're gonna get is gonna be Ukrainian/NATO or Russian cope.
Truth is that Russia got itself in to a difficult place.
They could go HAM and grind troops and equipment against the border until they give but they want to have an army leftover when they're done.
So at the moment they're playing a long economic game to try and make NATO countries drop support for Ukraine by restricting resources.
Whether this will work, we don't know yet.
Also Russians have a lot of equipment but it's very dated, Russia hasn't had the money to update it's military since the fall of the USSR.
Meanwhile Ukraine is receiving excellent equipment from multiple NATO countries along with military intelligence advice to keep them one step ahead of Russia.
Right now, Putin probably realises that his plan of having Ukraine demilitarise or installing a friendly regime isn't going to happen. But if he plays his cards right, he might make NATO nations suffer enough to put pressure on Ukraine to do a peace deal where they pull out of the eastern regions.

The goals of the SMO are to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, and they are doing that. The goal was never to take over Ukraine

Just keep one thing in perspective, if this was war only between Russia and Ukraine, Russia would took whole of Ukraine in 2-3 months, not only Eastern parts.
But this is a war between Russia-Ukraine-NATO.
NATO supplying not only military hardware to Ukrain, but also satellite images of Russian positions.
Considering all this, Russia is doing very well, and eventually Russia will win this war.

Russia are clearly incapable of winning militarily, don't buy the probably actual bots in these threads that insist that Russia never actually planned on successfully swarming and seizing large masses of territory.
That said, Russia are still in a decent defensive position against Europe now. They need to hold Donbas at all costs and wait until Western Europe goes into winter, then they will be able to negotiate their way out of a loss. Russia will get Donetsk and Luhansk republics but that's it.
