77 years after the end of World War II, Poland demands reparations from Germany in the amount of EUR 1.3 trillion, writes Christopher von Marshall, a columnist for the Tagesspiegel daily, noting that this sum could be repaid over several years.
As von Marshall argues, the sum of reparations calculated by Poland "is also political". “1.3 trillion euros is a lot. But not with regard to the 6 million Polish victims and huge destruction. This is one third of Germany's annual economic output and one sixth of the savings of private households. It could be paid off over several years if it had to be, ”von Marshall lists. At the same time, the payment would be "the most politically convincing way for Germany to build trust", as would treating Poland as an equal partner.
Von Marshall argues that Germany could easily pay this sum to Poland in a period of 5 years.
