According to University of Bremen professor Gunnar Heinsohn, Roman written history was mostly fabricated out of nothing. Roman civilization collapsed in the 10th century AD as opposed to the 5-6th century. He cites stratigraphy of ruins in rome itself and how there is zero change in architecture from early antiquity, late antiquity and early medieval. In other words, 1000 years of history within Italy was completely made up. The Roman Empire died out in the 10th century and replaced by German newcomers. It makes sense since all royal and noble families of Germanic origin can only trace their roots back to around this time and there is a dead zone of ancestry from the 10th century back to the barbarian conquest. Plenty of other neat things he talks about. The use of stratigraphy also destroys much of the historical accounts of other regions of the world.

Fomenko and Heinsohn are both worth listening to. They're looking at a simmilar issue from different angles. I think Fomenko looking at the timing of eclipses and such is more compelling because of their regularity, but there's also value in looking at the archaeological evidence and asking the simple questions like Heinsohn is doing. Fomenko also spent a hell of a lot more time on this than Heinsohn did, so we can expect his stuff to be more thorough.
