The division operator is ambiguous, which is why the fraction line is universally preferred. The equation in OP can be interpreted as

So the (1 + 2) factor can either be a part of the numerator or denumerator, depending on interpretation. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations#Mixed_division_and_multiplication

Nah, the problem is teachers like mine were brainlets regurgitating the same wrong bullshit for 120 years.
I was taught that when you write 2(1+2) instead of 2*(1+2) you have to multiply into the paranthesis first to dissolve it.
This is a greater problem on a global scale as brainlets congregate and reinforce each others stupidity.
