It has nothing to do with Covid, it's merely the pretense.
The lockdowns serve two purposes.
A) The perfect cover for quashing dissent regarding the current economic shitstorm in China, all they have to do is flag you and your app as covid positive and they can lock you in your home, block you from public transport, shops, take you away for quarantine etc
B) I suspect they're preparing the Chinese people for a wartime economy, shortages, unrest etc

Their lockdowns in previous years were much more severe (and effective) than ours, chinese didn't get it and didn't build up immunity. The vaccines are completely useless at this point, the reason the west is mostly OK with covid now is because enough people got it, most people in the west had vaccines and had covid multiple times now. While covid may not have been just the flu initially, it definitely is just the flu now. Same thing happened with the original flu, first years it fucking killed you, after a while and people getting it dozens of times it became a cough and a runny nose. China tried stopping their virus with brute force, it failed, now they're going through it like we did.

Because, China, like Russia, is trying to starve the west.
For Russia is easy because the western sanctions on their resources.
China doesn't have sanctions but they can't just refuse to sell shit out of the blue either, so instead they create the panic and lockdown their major cities, stopping production and logistics.
