Practical Kabbalah (to manipulate the world) was always frowned upon and became especially frowned upon after Luria. Kabbalah itself actually predates the Jews entirely. It at least goes back to ancient Assyria and further. The Assyrian elite were essentially monotheistic with the tree of life representing both the the gods and the star systems they used to chart their yearly ritual cycles... I wouldn't say it's evil.
It's an ancient practice that assumes one simple thing: we are temples for the living God. Over time we may perfect that temple, that inner kingdom, by recombining, the pieces of creation. You are the temple and God is within you. He is your very own, human imagination.
