Poland will more than double military spending next year, to as much as 138 billion zloty ($29 billion), in an effort to strengthen its defenses in the face of the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Spending on army is expected to rise to 98 billion zloty from 58 billion zloty this year, Premier Mateusz Morawiecki said at a news conference in Warsaw on Tuesday. Additionally, the government plans to spend as much as 40 billion zloty to buy arms abroad, he added.
“We have the ability to significantly bolster our army and to recruit new soldiers,” Morawiecki told reporters, citing concerns about the war in Ukraine among Polish citizens. The government plans to add more than 20,000 new soldiers in 2023, according to the prime minister.
30 bln dollar is almost half of what Russia spends on army. And it is only beginning. We will be spending more and more with every next year. Army becomes the biggest money-consumer in Poland lately. I would really want to see our army after 10 years of such massive investments.

We pretty much achieved most of things we planned. We created second fastest growing economy in the world. We built beautiful roads, houses, infrastructure. Our towns look prettier with every day. What we lacked in this picture was the most powerful land army in Europe. It is the only thing we need yet for full success.

GDP is a meme metric. Russia has the economy of the size of Italy or less by the GDP standards, yet the sanctions ain't doing shit and it's absolutely ravaging the EU and west by limiting gas and not playing along with EU/US schemes. Poland needs the strongest land and artillery-based army in Europe, because we must have ability to destroy our enemies far away from our borders. It is better for Poland to fight wars on territories of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, instead of our own territory. That's why we develop long-range abilities and purchase 500 long range MLRS platforms for example.
Poland can't afford having war on its land, it would be a disaster. If even one Russian tank crosses our border, it means that we lost.
