Warhammer 40k is just a copy of the world’s religions. The emperor obviously has themes of Christianity, the Imperium the last falling days of the Western Roman Empire, the sacrifice of psykers to keep the emperor alive on the golden throne from Aztec human sacrifices and the Horus Heresy the civil wars in the Roman Empire. It’s also a freaking satire of everything going wrong, of fascism and ignorance taking root and being celebrated and religious zealotry is amped up to the extremes. You shouldn’t take it too seriously.
The lore is dope tho.
