Except they wrote more non-latin and non-clerical literature than in any other part of Europe during the high middle ages. We have arguably a much richer and more interesting body of literature in Old Norse than in Old High German for example. Just because an area is peripheral and not a center of political disputes, royal intrigues and warfare doesn't mean they don't have an intellect and culture.
