EU wanted to incorporate Ukraine and have an energy crisis to facilitate their 'green' energy transition. Also they're America's bitch.
US wanted destabilize the region and trigger regime change in Russia to have another round of looting. Their alternative objective is to destroy the European economy, in which they definitely succeeded. And secondly to to weaken the Russian military and economy with a long war of attrition. This is failing.
Russia wanted to stop encroachment on their influence sphere and for Ukraine not to join NATO or the EU. Now they want to conquer the Ukraine.
Ukraine wants to destroy their own country because America told them so, rabid hate of Russians, and the hopes of joining the EU afterwards.
What's happening now is that the Russians are grinding down the Ukrainians. Don't be fooled by their lack of advancement, the Ukrainians are losing big time. Russia can keep this up for many more months. At some point when there isn't much left of the Ukrainian military, Russia will start an offensive and it will go very fast.
This winter Russia will shut off the gas to Europe entirely and this will cause a deep recession. Industry will shut down. The EU is kill. This winter there will be soldiers on the streets because of riots.
Russia will be fine. They'll just trade with other BRICS and aligned countries.
The Ukraine will be divided in a part that joins the Russian Federation, and a part that will have a 'neutral' puppet regime. The country is going to be a sausage fest for generations to come, because the women aren't going back.
The US will economically get out of this very well. But you know, trannies and diversity... On to the next war in Asia, which will not turn out so well for their economy.

The Soviets tried to integrate Ukraine, which was just Western Ukraine and a former part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time into their own newly built empire. To do that, they expanded their autonomous territory hoping to dilute them with Russians and convince them they're one big happy family one. They assumed the USSR would last forever. Fast forward 70 years, it didn't. Ukraine becomes an independent state, complete with all the former Russian territories. It watches Poland and the other Eastern European states become EU gibsniggers and enjoy better living standards. Meanwhile Russia and Ukraine are the cheap resources dump post-colonial Europe needs to maintain its first world lifestyle. Their salaries are low, their living standards are shit. Ukraine figures it no longer wants to be a third world shithole and would rather be an EU gibsnigger. A lot of Russian Ukrainians who previously hated actual Ukrainians feel the same. A few loyalist regions remain.
The US encourages Ukraine's westward drift because it pisses off Russia and because it doesn't believe Russia would risk to try and grab it back. Russia risks it anyway.

Theory A) Defensive invasion against Nato aggression.
-- Nato is trying to incorporate Ukraine and Georgia.
-- Nato stages a "coup" putting a pro-incorporaiton regime in Ukraine, which bans the Russian language and militarily occupies Russian speaking Donboss.
-- Russia invades to push Nato back.
-- Taking Ukraine will give Russia a sufficient buffer to protect against invasion, and nuclear attack.
Theory B) Russian aggression
-- Russia wants to restart the Soviet Union.
-- Masses military on Ukraine's border, Ukraine musters an army to fight them.
-- Russia steals Crimea, planning to steal more.
-- Russia interferes with the US elections to get a favorable president.
If Theory A was true, you would expect them to take the entire West of Ukraine, in order to keep Nato far away from their border. However, it appears they have retreated from this objective, and are instead focusing on taking the Donbass, which is the Russian speaking area where all the economy and resources are. In other words, by focusing on the Donboss, it looks more like an aggressive action by Russia, supporting Theory B.
However, there are other reasons they might be doing that.
1) The vast majority of the Ukrainian army is in the Donboss, thus focusing on the Donboss makes total sense.
2) The Donboss has a Russian population. Thus holding the Donboss long term could actually be feasible. While trying to hold other parts of Ukraine would be an unsustainable occupation ala Afghanistan or Iraq.
So which is it? Pretty complicated.
