The concept of self defense is laughable in the UK. It is only a defense in the case of murder, so if you defend yourself from someone who wasn't going to kill you or someone close to you- the second you hurt them it is considered a crime. The court may consider a mitigating factor through the fact the perpatrator attacked you first and you retaliated. But if your retaliation harms or hurts them worse than what you've suffered, it quickly becomes "they attacked you" to "you beat them up". The concept in the UK serves no one except police and soldiers, they are the ones who have the instruments to kill and are at threat of being seriously harmed or killed in the course of their job. But even they are scared to use bullets, various WEBMs of our country will usually show 1 guy with a machete being accosted and negotiated with by a group of no less than 8-10 police officers. The scope of the defense and the people enforcing the law don't square at all, as mentioned the second you successfully disable or disarm a violent person, it can quickly turn on to you unless you have a good barrister.
