Basically history as taught in media and school is history viewed through the lens of urban elites, specifically jews. Times that sucked for them were great for almost everyone else.

These circumstances, however, do not extend to modern society and mass communal living.

From what I can understand, the 50s were something of a middle ground. Men watched their language, until they were drinking with the boys. Women repressed their promiscuity, but still wore flattering, form-fitting clothes and had an occasional romp with the milk man. Children repressed their rebellious nature, until their parents were out. There's nothing really wrong with that. The best thing I can compare it to is someone politely covering their genitals, instead of spray painting them neon pink and doing the meat spin down Broadway.
