Nuclear weapons are divided into strategic and tactical classes.

A Strategic Nuclear Weapon is something intended for long range big-obliteration of cities, infrastructure, people, etc. It's not something that would be used in a battle, strategic nukes mostly fulfill their role just by existing because if you know the opponent has strategic weapons, you have no reason to use strategic or tactical weapons against him because he'll just do the same back to you. When you think of like, the fuckoff huge ICBMs that would fly across the oceans and obliterate all civilization, those are Strategic Nukes.

A Tactical Nuclear Weapon will usually be shorter range and intended to attack enemy troops directly, something like a Davy Crockett or a Genie Rocket--before guidance systems some psychopath in the US decided that dumbfire nuclear anti-aircraft missiles mounted on interceptor aircraft were a good way to shoot down enemy bombers.
