Yeah it sucked because I lived in a town that was like 40% Mexican from early 1900s immigrants and they always self-segregated. Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn in the world. It's spoken by over half a billion people. (590MM, #2 in native speakers after Chinese)
The written language is designed in a way that in most cases you don't need to memorize the spelling of every single word.
You know how it's written when you hear it, and you know how to say it when you read it.
There's no "omg, I hope I pronounced it right" that you hear from native English speakers all the time... because the language is consistent.

It's also a great gateway language. You have the added advantage that once you're proficient at Spanish, other romance languages are very easy to pick up.
A native Spanish speaker can figure out Italian in a matter of 3-4 months if he's diligent and well immersed in it.

There's also the fact that while most of the world is embracing stagnating nanny state socialism, many of the world's growing economies are in Spanish-speaking countries.
Many people from Anglophone majority countries eventually want to emigrate away from the growing totalitarianism and abusive taxation regimes of their home countries.
Or they want to go to a welcoming place with a warmer climate and bountiful nature. Many of the Spanish-speaking countries fit the bill for the tax-conscious and those who enjoy nature.
Another reason to emigrate is the cultural and social climate. Most people in Western nations are always angry about politics and whatever is the hot-button issue of the day.
They're on edge, waiting to snap at the littlest provocation. Conversely, the people in most Spanish-speaking countries are generally laid back, and warm and welcoming.

Unless your personal circumstances make it so you would benefit from learning any other language, if you're going to learn any at all Spanish should be the first one in your list for all the reasons above.
