Yes, lolcows initially attract attention because of poor choices or embarrassing mistakes. However, once they become the targets of daily abuse and harassment, they can no longer be blamed for their behavior.
Think about it. If you pick a random person off the street and start to harass them in a wide variety of ways on a daily basis, you will inevitably damage their mental health and reduce their ability to make sound judgements. Humans are not emotionless machines; nobody on Earth can experience daily mistreatment and abuse without being affected by it. That's why lolcows are prone to egregious choices; it's a direct result of psychological trauma stemming from years of persistent harassment.
Lolcows are ridiculed for their behavior, but the people who harass them are the *cause* of that behavior. The ones who should be scorned are the serial harassers, rather than the "cows" they torment.
Also, let's not forget the most important thing: when you read a gossip thread or watch a drama video about a person, you are developing an extremely inaccurate impressions of who that person really is, and what they are actually like. Those threads and videos are crafted to make the subject look as bad as possible to maximize entertainment value. When you consume that type of content, you are willingly letting yourself be programmed to belief in a false image of someone.
That's what a lolcow is; a fictional character who is based on a real person, but with every negative trait exaggerated to a cartoonish degree. The actual person is almost never as bad as the threads/videos make them out to be.
