The Rockies and the Appalachians don't split the US, they split parts of the US.
The Andes are a harsher barrier and pretty much impassable. Although they were crossed during the war of independence (at a massive casualty rate).
This is beyond the point because it's not a matter of conquering a region, but a government needs for its territory to be cohesive in matters of logistics and communication.
You'd need several old timey mega engineering projects to cut through the Andes somehow. Which wasn't convenient and wasn't done.
