It's over, lads. A British institution and tradition is on it's last breaths. The crippling costs of electricity plus the rising prices of things such as white fish and seed oils is causing over 50% of the ones we have left to shut up shop for good. All of the British shops are gone now, our greengrocers, fishmonger, butchers, bakers, pie and mash shops and fish and chip establishments have been replaced by fried chicken chops, Turkish barbers, Polski sklep, kebab shops, curry houses. My own towns remaining fish and chip shop shut up last year when the covid hit and it has become a pizza shop run by scowling Turks.
Our streets are unrecognisable and there is almost no recovery from this death spiral. Have had to hold back tears today knowing that soon it might be impossible to indulge in this delicious and historic treat.
