When Ukraine first declared independence during WW1 look up who recognized its claims. Spoiler: none of the countries they'd want to.
Then Bolsheviks gave Ukraine a place at UN and eventually allowed it to secede with no bloodshed. Now if modern Ukraine is 31-ish years old, it soon will spend 1/3 of its existence in a military confrontantion - which is more like real life than seceding and having no problems with anything.
